So beyond “pretty in pink”!

Why become a Feel Good, Girl! sponsor?      Media Kit

Based on our Market Analysis: Feel Good, Girl! is a very necessary concept

Despite advances women have made in the workplace and in society, girls are still depicted as sex objects in the media, and are still twice aslikely (by age 14 to 15) to suffer from depression than boys of the same age (Carnegie Council on Adolescent Development, "Great Transitions: Preparing Adolescents for a New Century. 1995).

According to Girlpower.gov, girls tend to lose self-confidence in early adolescence. As a result, they begin to perform less well in school and neglect the interests they developed in childhood. These changes reflect, in part, a new set of messages girls can receive at this age. For example:

1. Some girls who experienced adult and peer approval for athletic abilities before puberty may be discouraged from participating in many sports once their bodies begin maturing.

2. Girls who performed well in the classroom at ages 9, 10, or 11 often perform less well in school at age 14, and may receive less incentive to actively participate in class discussions, with many teachers giving greater attention to boys.

3. Girls in their early teens are often encouraged to place more emphasison their personalities, social skills, and looks, than on developing their own interests and aspirations.

4. Researcher Judith Jordan outlines two developmental paths in adolescence: the emergence in boys of "sexual entitlement" and in girls of "sexual accommodation" which can ultimately lead to a lack ofclarity for young women about sexual desire. (
